When your computer is sluggish and you can’t explain why, chances are that it has been infected with some form of malicious software. Malware infection is among the most common reasons for performance loss. What you have to do is use a security solution to scan your system and find out if it has been infected or not. ScanSpyware is such a security solution. It will scan your system, uncover, and remove spyware, adware, and other types of malicious software.

The ScanSpyware download of only 4.0MB won’t take much of your time. Installing the application on your Windows-powered computer won’t take long either; it’s a simple process of having to go through a setup wizard. The recommended system requirements for ScanSpyware are: Pentium 500 MHz or greater, 256MB of RAM or better, 40MB disk space. These are requirements that any computer on the market today can meet. The computer on which you install ScanSpyware can be powered by any Windows version from Windows 2000 up to Windows 7.

ScanSpyware’s interface is good looking and easy to figure out. On the left you have the main functions: quarantine list, preferences you can play with, a schedule you can set up, and access to the Diagnose and Fix application, a free diagnostic tool that you can use to clean your computer. Do note though that Diagnose and Fix is meant for advanced and expert users. You may end up damaging your system if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Getting back to ScanSpyware, you can run three types of scans: quick, deep, and custom. When you launch a scan, ScanSpyware will look for spyware, adware, malware, keyloggers, Trojans, identity thieves, hijackers, track threats and viruses. Once the scan is complete, the threats are displayed in real time in a list, as the program finds them. A licensed version of ScanSpyware will remove the threats it uncovers; a trial version will not.

You can schedule scans to take place automatically, say every day at 5PM, or every week on Friday, at 5PM. You can set it up so that before ScanSpyware runs a scan, it updates its malware database and so that after the scan is completed, ScanSpyware closes.

ScanSpyware offers a handy way of uncovering if your system has been infected. The application will scan for and remove spyware, adware, viruses, and other threats.

Pros

The system requirements are very low, any computer out there can meet them. ScanSpyware works with any Windows version from Windows 2000 up to Windows 7. Good looking, easy to use interface. Choose to run a quick, deep or custom scan. Schedule scans to take place automatically. A free diagnostic tool, called Diagnose and Fix, is included. Multilingual support is provided.

Cons

The trial version will detect the threats, but it will not remove them.
